Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Team While McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad selection news

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has selected captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are not included because of injury, while number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach opting against calling up the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test wins over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's three league matches so far and featured in the second string's loss by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Northern province lock Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is poised to deputise for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
