Football Association of Ireland Passes Resolution Urging Uefa Ban on Israel

Ireland's football governing body has given the green light to present a official proposal to Uefa, demanding the exclusion of Israeli football from continental club and international competitions.

Basis of the Proposed Suspension

The resolution, that had been put forward by Irish side Bohemians, highlighted alleged violations by the Israel Football Association of two important European football regulations.

  • Inability to apply and uphold an effective policy against racism.
  • Organisation of clubs in disputed territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association.

Ballot Results and Next Steps

As stated in an official statement from the FAI, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with seven against and 2 not voting.

The association intends to formally submit this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from Uefa competitions.

During a special assembly of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was posed to delegates. It passed by a large margin.

Earlier Uefa Considerations

The European body had earlier put on hold plans to ban Israeli football at the end of September, following the announcement of a US peace proposal for the area.

Although Uefa never publicly stated contemplating an special session on the matter, preparations were understood to be quite advanced.

International Context

This Irish move comes after similar calls in September from the heads of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for Israel's suspension from global football.

Those requests were issued after UN specialists urged Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that accused the country of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.

Israel has denied these claims and described the report as scandalous.

Possible Ramifications

Should European football's authority choose to suspend the IFA, it would probably strain relations with the United States government – co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which is firmly against such an action.

Even though the European body has the authority to suspend Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under Fifa.
